The Phoenicians figured out latitude in 600 BCE. Longitude took much longer, because it required a good chronometer, a way to tell time that was accurate and precise. What did people do for millennia before a decent pocket watch? They contemplated labyrinthine patterns, entertained each other with music in the drawing room, and spent lazy months ruled by the seasons, rather than the clock. There is something to be said for slowing down.
